Henri Lebasque (1865–1937) s-a nascut la Champigné (Maine-et-Loire). Lucrarile lui se afla in importante muzee frantuzesti, in Angers, Geneva (Petit Palais), Lille (Musée des Beaux-Arts), Nantes si Paris (Musée d’Orsay). Lebasque a murit la Cannet, Alpes Maritimes in 1937.

Si-a inceput educatia la Ecole des Beaux-Arts d’Angers, iar in 1886 s-a mutat la Paris. Acolo, Lebasque a inceput sa studieze sub indrumarea lui Léon Bonnat si l-a asistat pe Ferdinand Humbert la picturile murale de la Panthéon. In acea perioada, Lebasque i-a cunoscut pe  Camille Pissarro si Auguste Renoir, care ulterior au avut un mare impact asupra lucrarilor sale.

Viziunea lui Lebasque a fost colorata de contactul cu tinerii pictori, mai ales Edouard Vuillard si Pierre Bonnard, fondatorii grupului Nabis, Intimistii care sustineau calmul si linistea subiectelor domestice. De la prima intalnire cu Georges Seurat si Paul Signac, Lebasque a invatat semnificatia teoriei culorii care accentua folosirea culorilor complementare in umbre.

Lebasque a fost un membru fondator al Salon d’Automne in 1903 impreuna cu prietenul sau Henri Matisse. Doi ani mai tarziu, in grupul de artisti care au expus acolo s-au aflat Georges Rouault, André Derain, Edouard Vuillard si Matisse. Lebasque s-a imprietenit si cu artistii Gustave Rouault, Raoul Dufy, Louis Valtat si Henri Manguin.
