Daniel Maclise (25 ianuarie 1806 – 25 aprilie 1870) a fost un pictor si ilustrator irlandez, care a activat cea mai mare parte a vietii in Londra, Anglia. Maclise s-a nascut in Cork City, Irlanda, fiul lui Alexander McLish (cunoscut si ca McLeish, McLish, McCLisse ori McLise), un tabacar ori cizmar, insa, mai intai, soldat scoţian din regiunea muntoasa. Educatia lui a fost de cea mai mare simplitate, insa era dornic de cultura, pasionat de citit si dornic sa devina artist. Cu toate acestea, tatal lui l-a angajat in 1820, la Newenham’s Bank, unde a ramas timp de doi ani, dupa care a plecat sa studieze la Cork School of Art. In 1825 s-a intamplat ca Sir Walter Scott sa calatoreasca in Irlanda, iar tanarul Maclise, vazandu-l intro librarie, a facut, pe furis, o schita a marelui barbat, dupa care a litografiat-o. Lucrarea a devenit foarte populara, ceea ce a dus la numeroase comenzi de portrete, pe care le-a executat in creion. Mai multi prieteni influenti au recunoscut geniul lui Maclise si i-au promis, erau nerabdatori sa-i asigure mijloacele pentru a studia in Londra; insa a refuzat orice asistenta financiara si a economisit bani prin mijloace proprii, dupa care a ajuns in capitala pe 18 iulie 1827. Acolo a facut o schita a marelui actor Charles John Kean, pe care, la fel ca in cazul portretului lui  Scott, a litografiat-o si publicat-o, aducandu-i artistului o suma considerabila. A intrat la scolile Royal Academy in 1828,  obtinand cel mai mare premiu pentru studenti.Maclise a expus pentru prima data la Royal Academy in 1829. Treptat a inceput sa se limiteze exclusiv la picturi cu subiecte istorice,  ocazional portrete – ca de exemplu cele ale Lordului Campbell, romancierilor Letitia Landon, Dickens, precum si alti prieteni scriitori. In 1833, el a expus doua picturi care i-au crescut reputatia, iar in 1835, Chivalric Vow of the Ladies and the Peacock iau adus alegerea ca asociat al Academiei, de unde a devenit membru deplin in 1840.
