Rockwell Kent

Rockwell Kent (21 iunie 1882–13 martie 1971)a fost un pictor, ilustrator si scriitor american.Rockwell Kent s-a nascut in Tarrytown, New York, de unde s-a mutat pe la mijlocul anilor `40 intro gospodarie din Adirondack pe care a numit-o Asgaard si unde a trait si pictat, desenat pana la moarte.

În mitologia nordică, Asgaard este tărâmul zeilor Aesir, zei ai războiului şi ai puterii.

Rockwell Kent – Drifter

Kent a sudiat cu pictorii si teoreticienii influenti din acea perioada, printre care Arthur Wesley Dow, William Merritt Chase, Robert Henri, Abbott Thayer si Kenneth Hayes Miller. Fiind student la arhitectura al Columbia University, Kent a lucrat ocazional intre 1900 si 1910 ca desenator/proiectant si dulgher.

Primele picturi ale muntilor Mount Monadnock si ale New Hampshire au fost prezentate Societatii Artistilor Americani din New York in 1904, cand Dublin Pond a fost cumparata de Smith College. In 1905 Kent s-a aventurat in Monhegan Island, Maine, unde a ramas pe o perioada de cinci ani. Prima serie de picturi cu Monhegan au fost prezentate in 1907 la Galeriile Clausen, criticii apreciindu-l ca fiind primul artist modernist american.
