Gustave Caillebotte - Self Portrait with Easel

Gustave Caillebotte (19 august 1848 – 21 februarie 1894) a fost un pictor francez, membru si patron al grupului de artisti cunoscuti sub numele de Impresionisti, cu toate ca a pictat intro maniera mai realista decat multi dintre artistii din grup. Caillebotte s-a remarcat si pentru interesul sau in fotografie ca forma de arta.

Gustave Caillebotte s-a nascut pe 19 august 1848 intro familie pariziana din clasa de sus de pe rue Faubourg, St.-Denis. Tatal sau, Martial Caillebotte (1799-1874), a fost mostenitorulafacerii de textile militare a familiei si, in acelasi timp, judecator al Tribunalului Comercial al departamentului Seine.Tatal lui Caillebotte a ramas vaduv de doua ori inainte de a se casatori cu mama lui Caillebotte, Céleste Daufresne (1819-1878), care a mai avut doi fii dupa Gustave, René (1851-1876) si Martial (1853-1910). Incepand cu anul 1860, familia Caillebotte au inceput sa-si petreaca verile in Yerres, un oras de pe raul Yerres la aproximativ 12 mile la sud de Paris, unde Martial Caillebotte, Sr. isi cumparae o proprietate vasta. Aproximativ in aceasta perioada Caillebotte a inceput sa deseneze si sa picteze.

Caillebotte a obtinut o diploma in drept in 1868 si o licenta de practicare a dreptului in 1870. De asemenea a fost si inginer. Caillebotte a inceput sa viziteze studioul pictorului Léon Bonnat, unde a inceput sa studieze pictura foarte serios. Intrun timp relativ scurt si-a desavarsit stilul si si-a deschis primul studio in casa parintilor sai. In 1873, Caillebotte a intrat la École des Beaux-Arts, dar nu si-a petrecut mult timp pe acolo. A mostenit averea tatalui sau in 1874, iar cei trei frati si-au impartit averea familiei dupa moaartea mamei lor in 1878.Prin 1874, Caillebotte a intalnit si s-a imprietenit cu cativa artisti care lucrau in afara Academiei franceze oficiale, printre care Edgar Degas si Giuseppe de Nittis si s-a alaturat (dar nu a participat) la prima expozitie impresionista din 1874.

Stilul lui Caillebotte apartine Scolii de Realism dar a fost puternic influentat de asociatii impresionistii. In comun cu precursorii sai, Jean-Francois Millet si Gustave Courbet, precum si contemporanul sau Degas, Caillebotte a avut ca scop pictarea realitatatii asa cum era si cum o vedea, sperand sa reduca teatralitatea inerenta in pictura. Probabil datorita relatiei sale stranse cu semenii sai, stilul si tehnica sa variaza destul de mult in lucrarile sale, artistul “imprumutand” si experimentind, dar neaderand cu adevarat unui stil anume.
